Wedding Invitations - Answering Your Cost Savings Questions

Q: I’m considering saving money on invitation costs; would it be OK to spread the news by word-of-mouth to our friends and family and send invitations only to those who live out of town?

A: This is a commonly asked question. The answer to your question is no, it’s not OK. Everyone on your guest list should receive an invitation. This includes the parents, grandparents and siblings of the bridal couple. The officiant of the ceremony should also receive an invitation. This ensures that everyone has the same information about your wedding and that no one gets or feels left out. More often than not, invitations include respond cards that guests fill out and return to you. These give you a more definite determining of how many guests will actually attend your celebration.

Q: We are thinking about going the DIY route with our wedding invitations. We could cut our invitation budget considerably by using our home computer and printer. Do you have any tips for doing this?

A: If you are artistically inclined, then creating your own invitations can be a very nice approach to introducing your wedding to friends and family. However, most of us only think we are ready to tackle the task of DIY invitations. It is important to be aware of the time and costs involved in making your invitations. It’s purely myth that DIY is less expensive than having invitations printed professionally. You need to remember the costs of buying your own paper, the ink cartridges, envelopes and other components such as ribbon, stamps, embossers, etc. You also need to remember that your free time will be compromised when you print and assemble each one. After all is said and done, you haven’t saved much at all. Keep in mind you will also lose the formal look and feel of a professionally printed invitation when you do it yourself. Realistically, it is better to leave the job to the professionals. They have been doing this work for years and have a variety of invitation designs, themes, imprinting techniques, colors, lettering styles and other options to create a truly unique invitation for you.
